Where he worked and what he did, you can consider as a hibernation, before he realized that the only thing he finds comforting, is to materialize the existing chaos in his mind and organize it within the frames of his paintings. 

There are no pre existing sketches or rulers to maintain the symmetry, the end result of the work is as surprising to the creator as it is for the viewer. STG’s art generally is based around the idea of Japanese wabi-sabi (embracing imperfection).
